WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Legacy SCP protocol is also supported. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer.
The work on this project started in March 2000, while Martin Prikryl was working in the IT department of University of Economics in Prague.
The temporary name “WinSCP” (Windows Secure CoPy) was chosen until a nicer name was thought of (which never actually happened).
WinSCP was probably the first GUI file transfer client for SSH ever (at least on Microsoft Windows platform).
