TightVNC is a free remote control software package derived from the popular VNC software. With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in the front of that computer.
TightVNC can be used to perform remote control and administration tasks in Windows, Unix and mixed network environments. It can be very helpful in distance learning and remote customer support.
TightVNC is fully compatible with the standard RFB protocol used in VNC, so you can use TightVNC viewer with the standard VNC server and vice versa. But note that protocol enhancements implemented in TightVNC will work only if these enhancements are supported on both sides of the connection.
key features of TightVNC:
-Free, GPL-licensed, with full source code available;
- Useful in remote administration, remote customer support, education, and for many other purposes;
- Cross-platform, available for Windows and Unix, compatible with other VNC software;
- Well maintained and being actively developed.
-Support for video mirror driver (Windows 2000 and above).
-Scaling of the remote desktop (viewer for Windows and Java viewer).
-Efficient “Tight” encoding with optional JPEG compression.
-Enhanced Web browser access.
-Support for two passwords, full-control and read-only.
· All platforms: Added support for the standard RFB protocol version 3.8 with TightVNC extensions.
· All platforms: Made “host:port” parsing maximally compatible with VNC4. Interpreting a number in host names like somehost:5900 as an actual port number if it’s not in the range [0..99].
· Windows Server: Various user interface enhancements – changes in GUI labels, tray icon with a red border when incoming connections are not possible for any reason, more information in the tray icon tip, smarter logic in displaying the Properties dialog, and more.
· Windows Server: Fixed a problem introduced in TightVNC 1.3.8 – default passwords were not respected if user passwords were not set.
· Windows Server: Slightly improved handling of passwords. One of the notable changes is that now it’s enough to enter a view-only password without providing primary password…..
